Complex stochastic combinatorial problems in the transportation and logistics arena are difficult to solve in real situations. Here, we present the methodology of enriching the use of heuristics and metaheuristics with the use of Monte Carlo simulation and discrete-event simulation. Recently, the metaheuristics randomization is becoming very popular to solve stochastic combinatorial problems related to real decision making. Among the myriads of methods to randomize an algorithm, the use of biased statistical distributions is producing very good results. These successful outcomes are achieved by means of a biased random guidance of the metaheuristics which explore the most promising areas of the feasible region. After a general description of this technique, some applied cases are presented, making strong emphasis in transportation and logistics applications.
