Energy storage is becoming a major challenge in energy applications throughout the entire energy value chain. Thus, it is not a grid and renewables problem anymore, but a global one. We are surrounded by battery-powered devices and power-operated micro devices will become ubiquitous as the Internet of Things (IoT) develops. Not to mention electric vehicles and their own ecosystem.
In this work, a multi-purpose, general optimization model is proposed in order to gather energy storage systems deployment and performance from a general point of view, in the sense that different storage technologies are combined. In addition, even though energy storage is often associated with electricity, any other type of energy, e.g., heat, gravitational, etc., can be considered. The model aims at providing insights and guidance on the selection of technologies. In this regard, not only commercially available technologies are considered, but also disruptive or even foreseen ones.
