In this work we deal with the problem of determining the best set of frequencies in a metro network considering that the operation cost in each line is variable, depending on the train model operating the line, the passengers’ load and the average train speeds at segments. Knowing the network topology and given a certain demand matrix, a sequential optimization method to determine the regular timetable while minimizing user and service operator costs is proposed. As the frequency setting and the transit assignment are intertwined problems, the proposed procedure solves a sequence of interrelated transit assignments and frequency determination models. At each iteration, given a transit assignment, the resultant frequency setting problem is translated in a Mixed Integer Non-Linear model which is solved to optimality in a sequential way, both considering the different train models and the passenger load at segments. The proposed methodology is illustrated in a real size scenario.
